A dog standing guard over his owner’s granddaughter as she played in the sea quickly came to her rescue when the animal thought she was in trouble.

The little girl was knocked over by a wave as she jumped around on the coast near Gouville-sur-Mer in France.

The dog, named Matyas, quickly rushed forward, grabbed the girl by the scruff of her t-shirt and pulled her back to the beach.

The girl appeared not to be in any danger from the water and found the overprotective dog funny, giggling as he pulls her along.

Finally thinking the girl was out of trouble, the dog let her return to playing, although he continued to keep an eye on her antics.

The clip was shared online and has since been watched more than a million times since it was uploaded just over a week ago.

According to the Daily Mail, there was large debate online as to the breed of the dog with many suggesting Matyas to be either a Sarplaninac, a Leonberger, a Keeshond, or a Newfoundland dog. Matya’s breed has not been confirmed.
