A golden retriever Rio who is three years old gave birth to nine puppies last week. The dog mommy shocked almost everyone when among the nine puppies there was a little green puppy. Yes, the owner was stunned when she a mint green colour puppy came out. Louise Sutherland, Rio’s owner from Golspie in the Scottish Highlands, said that she was taken aback by the appearance of the puppy. In February this year, the same occurrence took place in Lancashire, when a chocolate Labrador gave birth to a green puppy.
The owner has named the green colour puppy Forest and even said that the colour of his skin is fading away. Well, Forest colouring is believed to be caused by a bile pigment which is popularly also known as biliverdin. This disease is found in the placenta of dogs. It is stated that if the fluid is mixed with the mother’s amniotic fluid which protects her pups can stain her newborn animal’s coat. “The first pup was stuck, so myself and my daughter Claire managed to free him and pull him out safely,” Mrs Sutherland said.
She further stated that “It was all hands on deck but then as the puppies started to arrive, we noticed that one of the puppies had green fur. We couldn’t believe it. When we checked it out later, we found out it is very unusual and to do with the placenta. The colour has faded quite a bit already and will be gone soon, I’m told.”
The owner has managed to find a good home for the puppies but is planning to keep Forest with herself. Mrs Sutherland said, “Rio had a total of seven boys, and one girl and they are all great and growing like mushrooms.
“This is her second litter, but the first was much more normal – a five-hour labour and five pups, two girls and three boys. But this will be her last.” Well, this rare birth phenomenon has grabbed a lot of attention, and their picture is all over the internet. Isn’t the picture way too adorable?
