From fear to tears – the reality of taking young children to see Santa is beautifully captured on camera

Father Christmas should, in theory, be universally adored by children. Just not this lot

He’s a universally loved, jolly sort of fellow, famed for his magical abilities and whose entire job is about making dreams come true.

So cast your mind back to being a kid, and how exciting the prospect of going to see Father Christmas was.

The anticipation, the questions you rehearse, the list you pore over – the all-consuming fear you’ll be getting a lump of coal or – worse yet – fruit.

As with most things in life though, the reality never quite lived up to the hype.

Father Christmas was just a random man with a dodgy fake beard whose lap you were encouraged to sit on – contrary to all your parents’ ‘stranger danger’ lectures. Remember that?

Here to jog your memory are these kids, who have hilariously captured the reality of visiting Santa.

His is the face of a man who’s seen this all before. The one below looks like he has, quite frankly, had enough of all this Santa-ing.

He knows when you’re awake

“Not today, thanks”

This child is basically still a baby, but there’s no pulling the wool over her eyes. This man’s fake beard is no match for her wisdom.

He knows when you’ve been bad or good

Lump of coal for this cheeky madameDON’T MISS

While we’re not suggesting that flipping the bird is acceptable, there is something admirable about this girl’s fighting spirit.

After all, tears and tantrums are a waste of energy. There are more efficient ways of totally ruining a photo your parents have paid good money for.

So be good for goodness sake

Putting up some strong resistance

This dapper Father Christmas is having none of this toddler’s sass. Maybe it’s his swashbuckling attire which has stumped her?

Note how it’s taken both parents to get her within any sort of proximity to him. Impressive work, kid.

Three uneasy…. Don’t laugh, this is terrifying, say kids. As Santa has a chuckle.

You better watch out

Poor man

As terrifying and disappointing as these visits can be, let’s use this photo to take a moment and consider what it must be like for Father Christmas.

We hope they get issued with ear plugs for all the times they’re forced to grin and bear an apoplectic toddler tantrum.

You better not cry

We’re not body language experts, but there’s something about the girl’s stance in particular which tells us she’s not exactly having the time of her life.

Better not pout

If Father Christmas was to drink a glass of sherry or port in every house in the UK alone, this would equal to nearly 24 million units.

Looking at these photos, it sort of makes sense.

I’m telling you why…

You win some, you lose some.

This is the sort of photo parents torture their offspring with when they bring a partner home for the first time.

Get me away from this man, screams a frantic toddler, while he accepts his lots as Santa.
